I would like some advice on substrates. I going to start working on replacing an elevated back lighted sign with a sign that is not. The sign itself will still be elevated, but it is only supported from the top. I would like to sandblast it, and I was thinking about using HDU. But I am afraid it will break with no side supports. Any information would be great. Also needs to be light weight.

How big is it going to be? Is it single or double faced? Hanging from a building or pole?
The more durable HDU can get heavy. How thick are you thinking?

The sign will be hanging from a pole, and will be two sided. Size is 3' x5' and I'm thinking 1" to 1 1/2" thick. Thank you for your reply.

I'm just thinking outloud here. I'll bet you could come up with a hanging method that would double as a supporting method for a double faced sandblasted sign. With the framework between the faces, the face material wouldn't need to be as thick, so the 1" HDU for each face would probably do.
