ok guys hows this for a moan
why do these guys with little or no experiance allowed to make the plastic stick on letters in vinyl
i know that there are some good ones out there that do this job but there are also those who get a machine of e bay then decide to call them selfs a bloody signwriter
now lets be fair us brothers of the brush have studied letters and how to construct them by the use of a brush while these muppets think they are better than us
in was working on a shop one day painting the sign above the shop and there was one guy inside appling a vinyl substrate to the windows
well this guy wouldnt talk to me i was wot appeared some kind of desease
and yet he had tha audasity to call himself a sign writer
sorry guys it just gets up my goat
sorry all for the whinge but it had to be said

I feel your pain mate-
Never really understood it myself- and there are alot of good and bad in both ides of the trade..BUT, what does annoy me a bit is the stealing of the word SIGNWRITER- which they are not..signmakers yes-but Writers.???

LOL- a quiet night in then!

Thats my main reason for staying OUT of the vinyl game to be honest- I can get a good price for my hand painted work..why should I go cut my neighbours throat for that £50 van job.?.....No thanks.

Its a shame- because ultimately the dabblers devalue the entire trade, and its harder to sell quality- (in paint or vinyl) after they've finished .

Couldn't agree more guys. I've never used a brush myself, and i do make signs with vinyl, but i don't call myself a signwriter. Don't call myself a signmaker either to be honest, as you said, i'm not in it to nock something up for £40, mugs game! Too many at it round my way so i've left them to it.

The thing is i'm designer/artist who just happens to make a few signs. My goal in life creativity and perfection. SignMAKERS are not evan artisans, they are the McDonalds to our Claridges, they have seen a market that needs the product as quickly and simply as possible, no thought, no questions, just get the colour right and make sure its bigger than next door.

In comparrison our market will always be smaller, forgotten, ridiculed and ultimately admired.

glad to see yr a designer as well
i think a lot of these muppets that do vinyl aint got a clue
when i served my apprenticeship
in plymouth dockyard we had to learn signwriting graining marbaling etc etc all the old trades then we had the lessons about coulour layout design which light are about (a key factor ) because certain lights discoulour certon coulours so all that had to be taken into consideration
for example its no use being on a sub when the light turn to red and you have a safty sign writen in red aint it now
we had some old boys that taught us and they new everything
unfortantly i didnt finish my apprenticeship due to govement cut backs as always
but to do a good sign does matter on layout coulour
oh and another old trick i learen was to spell words differantly
honest a old bloke taught me that if you miss spell a word but in the same context as the original spelling the mind takes the sign in and thus people remember the sign and product but they are not sure why
you have to be care full on that one though

After turning the numbers they say life begins at & doing nothing else since leaving school other than painting signs I have met many who call them selves sign writers and have no idea what a maul stick is, just as I have met many who hand letter a bash style!... Just for reference James Kelly who founded SignPig is one of the few vinyl lettering airbrush artists who is also a time served traditional sign writer, just are few of his followers- unfortunately the rest just as the other sign forums are for those that just call them selves sign writers, thus this untimely predicament! the numbers here on signoholics are small, but rest assured we are all believers of the brush, for what creates & what it aspires- although I have never heard of the miss spelling- anyone? haha.

yeh pete it was a old style spelling but you have to be care full as not to make it as obvious as it is
it was a old boy that showed me he had misspelt a church sign or some thing like that cant remember the word axactualy but it was there and because it was misspelt it stuck in yr mind
bit like a optical elusion if you know wot i mean its a bit hard to explain but it worked
also had a old timer who wouldnt give me the secret of making the acid etch go frosty
well he did give me the secret in the end after i had payed him half a weeks wage about £25 at the time lol
and the secret is "^&^%&*(((00000 )_)_&&&^%$$£"&**
work that out lol
no he just gave me a packet of the old soap flackes that you did yr washing in then told me just add that
i could of died half a bloody weeks wage for some thing i could pick up from the shop
has any one else herd of that one personaly i never got the chance to try it

well I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this and not happy about the team effort of the sign industry, that use to be there alot stronger

yes been saying along time that us in the industry should be quailifide in some manner...before opening a shop like 3-5 levels of expertease

I've got one long list of customers that have become sign makers, just cause they got the cash even one became a sign wholesaler although now good still, did it without quailfications just money

yes the forums, venders, schools, industry organiztions, advertisers, all of us need to develope some standards, and ways and means to achive this ..just having money does not quailify to me ..anyway my 2 cents lol
