Heres a song to the big players, who ever they may be?

I have been self employed painting signs, messing about with paint, glue, all manner of mixed media graphical creations, both hand made & of late mixing modern sign making, Corel draw, sign programs, photo shop etc with my ability layout & design as a fluent language & but not last been able to sell ice to the snowmen, all for a love of what we do... for 23 years!

So when you see these high flying sign company’s (the big players) offering silly wages ( £80K - $160K) & then employing ex telecommunications managers & similar as sign designers & sales, in a field that demands the very best understanding of what we do!? well your guess is as good as mine..

We as Sign folks "true to ourselves" can offer the big players an array of specialised techniques, to die for styles, perfection in PR marketing & all in lot less time scales.. both maintaining our care free life styles & sharing, changing the otherwise (primarily) boring sign industry! What an opportunity that could be
but "their is nowt queer as folk" ...........

would be interesting to here others "take" on this?

I think the reason most of us don't work for "the big guys" is that it's a clash of cultures. I for one have a helluva problem with authority - if I'm going to respect or follow rules, they have to make sense and not insult my intelligence. The reason big corporate shops hire ex-telecomunnications managers to design signs is that they can operate in a corporate environment without the overriding urge to strangle someone. They don't get good designers, because good designers are like us - independent thinkers with artistic temperments - and we are thought of as crazy, eccentric difficult, whatever... and, in that context, we are!

Talk to guys in the States who have worked for Disney or one of the other big ammuement companies. They get to do some outrageous work, but the corporate BS and asskissing takes all the joy out of it.
