I want to get some brushes to start learning hand lettering. What is a good selection of "everyday" brushes that I should purchase?
Mack Brushes (http://www.letterheadsignsupply.com/mackbrush.htm)
What sizes?
Thanks!
-Marek
Always buy the best you can afford it makes it a lot easier if a brush goes where you want it to go.
I always buy sable chisel in quill, or pointed for roman and script styles.
You may be better if starting to get a mid range set of sizes and rig and fill in with a flat brush till you can handle the brush comfortably.
Maybe a set of 2112 chisels or 2113 pointed from A.S. Handover or Cherwells ( sizes 1 to 6 ) maybe bigger depending on how big a letter you want to practice doing.
Have fun, Milo

Hi Milo, welcome to the site! Hi Marek, id say iether wrights or handover chisel meddium length size's 2,4,6,8 and a 12 poss a 8 flat poster writer short hair, ive always used chisel writers, as for me they seem to hold paint well, pull long lines, after practice keep your letter edges square, tend to use a number 6 or 8 for everything. number two for outlinning, a mack signiture brush is good for detail works when you get better. Paints One Shot, thinned with One Shot reducer, paint dryers or synthetic thinner, dab of turps, 2k hardener. and artists oil to keep shine! Airbrushes, saundries........... well get going with your brushes 1st! (and dont use tape till you can pull a perfect serif letter- then when you do, when you can, things should be almost perfect- about 6-12 months practice from now, say 2- 3 hours a day)- the rest will come over time, handovers and wrights sell a few lettering books teaching you the art, or direct from signcraft magazine their is a lot of help available. good luck. any further help, please feel free to post on the boards.
Hi Marek!- All good advice there but ar'nt you Stateside?
Give Ron and Christy a ring at letterhead supplies- They will help you out with something.
Better still- get yourself to Wales 2007 and get your Wrights and Handover kits there!

Hi Wayne,
Yes, sorry. I should have clarified that I am in the states. The site I posted is letterheadsignsupply.
I am also thinking of heading back over in 2007 to attend the meet. It's not too far from my family.
