I know I have 3 weeks chocka with work so I made time today to have a play with the brushes.

It's a poor attempt I know but it was the best I could do today. I promise to do better next time.

I drew the lettering by hand with a pencil but it wasn't easy enough to read and that is I think why the last two letters are distorted. I need to get my Stabilos out next time I think.

Eventually, when done to a reasonable standard, this will be for my mother in laws house.

Don't be embarrassed, we've all been there....When I was where you were at, there was NO INTERNET to help me! There wasn't even any LETTERHEADS, just Disco.

Good on you Chunk

Cheers guys. I am thinking of bringing the gear home so I can do some here as there is no way I can do any at the shop for the next 3 weeks or so. I just landed 3 BIG contracts. Sadly I can't show you all pics as they're Vinyl jobs.

Will do my best to get some more done and redo this piece asap and will update on progress.

Hey Chunkie, how big is that? Way to go...like Mike says, we've all been there. Just keep at it. As long as you got the four "P"s
Practice
Patience
Persistence
Passion
You're further ahead than most folks.

My first sign had a hotdog painted on it.
I don't know what went wrong but a few weeks later the hotdog turned green!!! HAHAHAHAHA

Keep on with it Chunkie! just like dave says, remember the 4 P's.

Cheers guys, it's nice to be encouraged.

The panel is White oak and about 30 cm across.

It's a piece the local timber merchant was throwing in the bin as an offcut so I stopped him and routered it into something chamfered and ready to paint.

It has 4 coats of varnish on it with the last being watered down with white spirit. I foind it gives me a better final gloss that way. All I got to do now is work of the brush handling!

Chunk-Try a more textured paint finish for your practice panels (like a foam roller finish-but not laid off)- you will find you get better brush control as it wont go sliding around so much.

Hay Chunk.
Before all this vinyl stuff came in there were quite a few so called signwriters in our area and you've done a better job there than alot of them could ever do.
Keep it up mate.

Just a quicky guys. The gold is rubbing off with my fingers almost as if the sieze is soft like putty. I did colour it with Oneshot so maybe I used too much or is there another reason?

What Mike said... I love the clowns that come up to me at a meet when I'm lettering something, and they say "OOOH, I could never do that!"...to which my answer is "Why? Are your fingers broken? Are you retarded? Blind?... NO? Well, then, it isn't that you CAN'T, its that you don't know HOW. You CAN learn HOW.... there are people right here that can teach you, unless your real problem is you are too bloody lazy to make an effort or practice. In which case, you are right, you CAN'T"..... This approach weeds out the slugs real quick.

You are making the effort. Keep it up. For those that make the effort, I have endless patience and respect. For those that won't, I offer little other than pity. Hey, this is a tough business; cowards don't show up and the weak will die.

Well put Cam.
Chunk-..Sounds like you gilded too soon fella, what was the size you used?

Thanks for the words Cam.

Wayne, it's LeFranc 3 hr and I just dribbled some one shot in so maybe it was too much and too soon.

May be painted too thickly-(like your size dried to a skin on top..you thought it was dry- you apply your gold and hey -(not very)- presto- the gold sinks into the wet size.

You only need the thinest of thin layers of size fro a nice bright gild.

( and Cam showed me this in Scotland- Gilding some dimentional letters)
He taught you can wipe off a lot of the size with paper towel- and then get a very very good gild indeed!

Ahh, that'll be it Wayne. I did put a nice thick layer on thinking it would give me a good coverage.
